THE GLOBAL "BEACH BALL MADNESS" PAPER BIKE RALLY

Suuren päivän alla (Su 25.lokakuuta) Stanford Universityn erään ruohokentän tuntumassa kävi kova kuhina. Yksi toisensa jälkeen ympäri maailmaa paikan päälle  raahatut paperipyörät nousivat epämääräisistä kasoista osia täyteen loistoonsa ja saivat päälleen viimeistellyn sotamaalauksen. Oma re-board pyörämme koottiin liimaamalla viilletyt saumat alkuperäiseen malliinsa, tukemalla saumat kontaktimuovilla ja lisäämällä saumakohtiin ylimääräisiä re-board paloja. Koko komeus maalattiin lopulta kultaisella maalilla ja "The Royal Re-Boarders" oli valmis taistoon.. Riehakas kisa käytiin kuuman Kalifornian auringon alla vesisodan säestyksellä. Pyörämme kesti kaikki koettelemukset ja vesiryöpyt lähes vahingoittumatta!! Tuloksena joukkuekisan pronssisija ja kunnianosoituksena ehjänä säilyneille pyörille perinteisesti osoitettu "jäädytys" paikallisen työpajan kattoon. Sieltä tulee siis rakas re-board paperipyörämme tervehtimään tulevien vuosikurssien opiskelijoita -DMPn logo ansaitusti kultakyljessä kimaltaen! Upea päätös huikealle projektille! Early on the morning of the Big Day (Sun 25th of October), one of the grass fields at the Stanford University was already packed with students. One after each other, the extraordinary bike structures rose from the messy piles of paper and cardboard parts. There were teams from all over the world, and each of them were tuning and painting their paper bikes for the final race. The Re-Boarders' bike was put together by glueing the seams back to their original shape, supporting them with some plastic cover and adding few extra pieces of re-board for support. Finally, the whole beauty was finalized by covering it with glittering gold paint, and so were "The Royal Re-Boarders" ready for the battle.. The boisterous race was held under the hot Californian sun, and some extra twist was added by shooting water from cannons and buckets. Astonishingly, our royal bike went through all the hits and water without any major damage!! The result was bronze from the team race, and a traditional honour of lifting the unscathed bikes up to the ceiling of the local design working loft. So, our dear paper bike will be greeting the future students from the heights of the Stanford design loft -with the DMP logo glowing rightly on its glittering side panel! Fantastic end for the amazing project! THANK YOU DMP & OTHER SUPPORTERS!!!

Hyvää huomenta Kalifornia! / Good morning California!

Motelli Coronet, 23.10.2009 klo 9.oo, shortsikeli. Vihdoinkin, reilun 25 tunnin reissaamiseen jälkeen pääsimme määränpäähämme Palo Altoon. Aurinko paistaa ja elämä alkaa maistua. Puolet pyörämme osista on jo täällä ja loppuja osia odotellaan vielä matkaavien Antin ja Sirjan mukana tulevaksi. Tällä hetkellä vaikuttaa siltä, että pakettimme kestivät suhteellisen hyvin lentokentän murjomista ja osat ovat kutakuinkin ehjiä. Seuraavaksi suuntana Stanfordin campus ja pyörän kokoaminen!

Motel Coronet, 23.10.2009 9 A.M. and I am wearing shorts, pretty amazing for a Finn. At last, after over 25 hours of traveling we are now at our destination Palo Alto, CA. The sun is shining and life is sweet. Half of our Paper bike´s parts are already here and we are still waiting for the ones that are coming with Antti and Sirja. It seems that most of our packages lasted well the handling of the airports and we are good to go. Next destination is Stanford campus and rebuilding our beautiful bike!

DMP:n Markuksen vinkki vitonen / The tip from the DMP's Markus

Kotimaan kisoista on alettu pikkuhiljaa toipumaan ja katse on käännetty rapakon toiselle puolelle ensi sunnuntaina (25.10) maineekkaalla Stanfordin yliopistolla käytävään Global Paper Bike Race kisaan. Ennen matkalle pääsyä edessä oli yksi yllättäviin mittasuhteisiin kasvanut haaste: Kisapyörämme piti saada mahtumaan järkevän kokoisiin paketteihin, jotta se saataisiin kuljetettua lentokoneessa matkatavarana. DMP:n Markus ojensi jälleen auttavan kätensä ja istuimme yhdessä alas pohtimaan parasta ratkaisua. Ongelmallisia olivat lähinnä suurikokoiset sivupaneelit. Markuksen vinkeistä viisastuneena päädyimme taittelemaan suurimmat levyt kasaan: re-board levy taittui hienosti kasaan mattoveitsellä tehtävän kevyen viillon ympäri. Nyt ei muuta kuin kisaintoa uhkuen reissun päälle... Here we come California!!!

After recovering from the local Paper Bike Rally the focus has already been turned to Sunday's (October 25th) Global Paper Bike Race on the other side of the ocean, at the prestigious University of Stanford. Before we could step in to the airplane there was one suprisingly challenging problem to solve: Our dear race bike refused to fit into the right size of boxes in order to get transported to the U.S. Once again, DMP's Markus offered his helping hand, and we sat down together to solve the packing problem. The most problematic parts were the large size panels. Finally, we ended up folding the panels into smaller pieces:  re-board bends neatly over a shallow surface cut, as Markus wisely taught us. Now, all we need to do is to remember to pack the winning spirit and hit the road... Here we come California!!!

Huima kisa / Amazing race

Ilmassa oli suuren urheilujuhlan tuntua ja väkeä kertyi Aalto Venture Park:iin ihan kiitettävästi. Savukone lauloi kun alkupuheiden jälkeen viisi huippuunsa viritettyä pahvista pyörää valui savuverhon läpi komeana letkana yleisön ihailtavaksi. Hetken päästä ensimmäiset rantapallot saivatkin jo kunnolla kyytiä ja päätyivät nopeasti komeille maalitelineille. Hiki lensi ja vaarallisia tilanteita oli riittämiin kun vasta puolella Scarlet avasi tulensa ampuen ilmaohjuksia. Re-boarderssit pärjäsivät kisassa hyvin nopean ja jykevän pyöränsä avulla sijoittuen viimeisen erän murskatappion takia kolmanneksi. Huolimatta pienistä luotettavuushuolista re-board-pyörämme kesti hyvin kisan rasitukset. Kisasta viisastuneena lähdemme hakemaan revanssia Jenkkilästä!

As the quest were slowly filling the Aalto Venture Park it started to feel like a great sport event. While the smoke machine was covering the entrance, five extremely trimmed paper bikes rolled in for the audience to admire. Soon the referee whistled and first four bikes hustled for the beach balls and put them to the goal rack. Teams were sweating and there was plenty of dangerous situations when facing Scarlet, the air missile shooting vortex cannon. The Re-boarders did quite well in the race with their agile and sturdy bike finishing third because of the major loss of third round. Despite of small reliability problems our re-board bike didn´t suffer significant damages during the race. So next we are heading for bigger awards in the States!

Viime hetken paniikki / Last minute panic

Hyvässäkään näytelmässä kaikki ei mene aina käsikirjoituksen mukaan. Re-boarderssit kokivat kauhun hetkiä viime yönä, kun mahtavan pyörämme runko natisi liitoksistaan testiajon tiukoissa kurveissa. Tuloksena oli pieni, mutta uhkaava halkeama etupyörän tukirakenteissa. Syynä oli selkeästi pieni suunnitteluvirhe, jota tiimimme alkoi samantien työstämään parempaan malliin. Tämän päivän kisasta tullee siis monessakin mielessä jännittävä. Toivotaan että viimeyön tukirakenneviritelmät kestävät myös tosipaikassa!

There is always something that is not going according to plan. Re-boarders were experiencing scary moments late last night, when the all-mighty bike was showing some signs of mortality. In the wild test drive, we managed to create a small, but rather terrifying crack in the support structure of the front wheel. The reason was this a small design error we had mede earlier in the process. Last night was spent building support for the support structure, and early this morning the situation is looking quite good. However, today's race will be exiting in many sense.. We'll see how robust our last nights ideas are when the moment of truth really hits.

Yksi päivä H-hetkeen.. / One day to the Big race...

Huomisen H-hetken lähestyessä kovaa vauhtia ensimmäinen Re-boarder, Vi, aloitti jo aikaisin aamusta renkaiden kokoamisen. Renkaat koostuvat seitsemästä ympyrälevystä, jotka liitetään toisiinsa kaksipuoleisella teipillä. Rengas viimeistellään liimaamalla ulkokehäksi pala paksuinta pahviputkea. Antti jatkoi edellisillan viimeistelytöitä hiomalla akselien ja työntötangon aukkoja suuremmiksi. Tunnelma alkaa olla Design Factoryn työpajalla melkoisen hektinen ja kasvava jännitys alkaa tuntumaan ilmassa. Ensi yönä Otaniemessä paistaa valot ainakin yhden rakennuksen ikkunoista.. täällä ei ajota nukkua viimeistelytöiden lomassa!

Tervetuloa huomiseen kilpailuun paikan päälle kaikki kiinnostuneet!! Luvassa on takuuvarmasti jotain ennekokematonta.. Kutsu Paper Bike Rallyyn!

While the days are getting fewer before the Paper Bike Rally, the first Re-Boarder, Vi, got up early to start putting the wheels of the bike together. The wheels compile from seven round discs, which will get attached together with double-sided tape. Then, the finalizing will be done by glueing an outer cardboard rim around the re-board discs. Antti continued yesterday's finalizing work by grinding the holes for the axis and pushing bars. The atmosphere at the Design Factory is beginning to reach quite hectic levels, and the thrill for tomorrow is getting increasingly evident. Tonight there will be lights on at least in one of the Otaniemi buildings throughout the night... there will be no time to rest for any of the teams before the Big race tomorrow!
